Appearance: With a slight wave to her blond hair and light blue eyes, Maya stands at 5’3” and is a little under average and kind of lanky. She’s a California girl, but believes she’s part albino for her light skin color that never tans and is more prone to sun-burn. Her fashion style is forever changing, but has recently taken up a more sophisticated look, coming out of her goth/rocker phase.
Underneath her clothes shows the hardship of her childhood, scars along her back and torso when her father got just a little drunk and took his anger out on her. Also duel scars adorn each wrist from her attempt at suicide.
Personality: Maya is a rather simple person, now. Although glad to be cured and not having her dissociative identity disorder, makes her much happier than she used to be. She’s a good listener and tries her best at giving advice. She’s more of a loner type, and does well by herself, but doesn’t mind the company of others.
She always has the desire to escape reality and does that by painting (and is quite artistic) or listening to music. Her face doesn’t hide her emotions as much as she would like, and she’s easy to read most of the time, which isn’t something she cares much for.
Power: Formally, she could bring people back from the dead and her other personality, Ava, could kill people by touch. Waking up with a year missing, Maya comes to find that her mutation is a little different. Her powers seem to be centered in her hands, her right one giving life just at the cusp of death while the left takes life away slowly. However, she has no control over her powers. Taking and giving life with just a touch, so she has been forced to wear gloves. Not only because she might hurt someone on accident, but if she does it takes a lot out of her.
History: Born in a small beach town in California, Maya grew up walking down the main street and knowing almost everyone she passed. Her mother owned her own little boutique in the heart of town, selling homemade jewelry and scarves. As a small child Maya spent most of her time at the shop with her mother and aunt. Her father was a lawyer and was always too busy, never having a moment for his family.
At six years old her mutation crept up on her. Bringing back a dead dog she found on the beach on one of the walks she took with her mother. It terrified her, but Michelle encouraged Maya that it was a gift and she should never be scared of it. Although, this was definitely something that was kept from her father, he was gone too much anyway and it wasn’t something that could be brought up over the phone.
At the age of ten, Maya started to go through puberty and her temper was more active, always getting angry at the littlest of things. When a simple ‘no’ became an answer from Maya’s mother, Maya flipped and transformed into an unknown individual, who would later be revealed as Ava. Even at such a young age Ava was a bloodthirsty monster and killed Michelle Traveler on the spot.
After her mother’s funeral, Anthony Traveler lost his job at the firm and alcohol became his breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Though he didn't know his daughter was a mutant or that a split personality of hers killed his wife, he blamed Maya for everything. He took it out on her numerous times, the beatings sometimes bad enough that she would end up in the hospital. Many times her aunt and uncle had tried to tell her she needed to tell the police, to press charges, but Maya believed she deserved the beatings. Sometimes she fought back when it became too much, running away to her aunt and uncles until her father was sober enough to apologize and she'd go back home.
When she turned seventeen Maya left for New York, heading to a place her aunt had found out about. She was going there not only to get away from her father and his new found girlfriend, but she knew she needed help. Being at Xavier’s Maya didn’t really get to meet many people. She had met a boy named Michael and she instantly felt something for him. Their relationship had grown into something more and she was happy and content, but Ava wasn’t. She was always fighting to get out again and she succeeded.
Ava coming back had changed Maya’s life forever; she joined the Brotherhood and became quite a big part of it. Ava had been able to keep Maya at bay for only so long, before the curly haired girl started to fight back, this caused for a huge mental struggle and in the end the two personalities melded into one. Maya took her name, kept the bitchy attitude, as well as Ava’s powers, her own becoming inactive. Maya also stayed in the Brotherhood, which was a conflict between her and Michael, whom she went back to. John hated Michael, and if Michael could hate, he would probably would have felt the same.
Months went by and Maya always found time to sneak away from the Brotherhood to see Michael, but then, he stopped calling, and Maya thought maybe he didn’t want her anymore. She later found out that his heart condition had killed him. Maya turned to drinking, something she had once promised herself she would never do.
After an encounter with another mutant who messed with her mind, Maya came out of the merge, becoming her true self again with her tag along, Ava. Ava had a lot of control over Maya but after a while Maya took control. With a suggestion from Logan she signed herself into a psychiatric hospital. She was put under a medication and it had helped her for a while, but somehow Ava came out and being terrified at being in a hospital and not having control, she tried to commit suicide. She almost succeeded. After that, Maya was given the cure and decided it was best for her to keep taking it for her safety and others.
