Full Name: Charity Poppy Winters
Alias: Sparrow
Age: 21
Birthday: October 11th 1991
Hometown: Cork, Ireland
Current Occupation: Student at Xavier's/Junior X-Man
Appearance: Petite and slender, Charity is almost doll-like in appearance. Her dirty blonde hair reaches her elbows and she leaves it natural and simply styled so the loose waves often fall in front of her face. With traditionally Irish fair skin, she has a couple of large freckles and boasts pale teal-grey wide eyes. Despite the strict religious upbringing she and her siblings had, while in the travelling community, she dressed in revealing clothes as to look her best in the hopes of finding a husband.
Personality: Somewhat more shy than her siblings or friends in the community, Charity is a quiet child who always wanted the education her upbringing did not allow and as a result as become quite introverted. A dreamer, Charity has a loyalty to her family for their credit of raising her but always dreamed of seeing more of the mainstream society’s world.
Powers: In the simplest terms, Charity can fly. Her ability requires no kind of ‘arm-flapping’ or even diving poses and is more akin to practising ballet to master.
History: Born into a traditional Irish travelling family, Charity has spent her whole life dealing with the ill-informed prejudices of mainstream society. As the majority of the world never bother to learn about her culture, they demonised it and the travellers were forced to become very inward-looking and self-dependent. Charity was the youngest of the Winter brood and thus would be the last child to wed, which was a major aspect of a traveller’s life.
Growing up, Charity saw a lot of the UK and Ireland, even for a traveller child. Her father was a horse breeder and took his business anywhere where his animals were needed. This of course took the family to Appleby Horse Fair every year when the travelling community came together. It was at Appleby that Charity’s siblings would first meet their suitors and within a year would be married in a typical over-the-top traveller style. As marriage in the travelling community and their Catholic faith is for life, it seemed almost crazy to the more outwards-thinking Charity that such a firm commitment should be made so quickly and at such a young age and everyone around her married between the ages of sixteen and eighteen.
Out of her siblings, Charity was always closest to her eldest sister Blair and tended to follow her sister around like a shadow. When Blair got married to Sean O’Malley, Charity was left on her own, daydreaming about what it would be like to be a ‘country girl’ aka a member of mainstream society. However, soon enough her sister Nicolette was married and the pressure was on for Charity to find a nice boy to marry. Having never even held hands with a boy due to the prudish nature of her society, Charity didn’t know what to look for at all but on meeting Seamus Byrne at Appleby when she was just seventeen, she figured he was as good a choice as any. He was eighteen and rather unsure of himself like Charity and almost instantly they were engaged and Charity was found herself whisked off in wedding madness and designing a typically tacky and sparkly wedding dress.
As the wedding approached however, Charity became very nervous about her impending marriage and the more nervous she got, the more headaches she got until she was pretty much bedridden for the week leading up to the wedding. On the morning of her wedding, her family’s caravan was a flutter with excitement and tulle ruffles on dresses but Charity was ready to die with nerves. Taking a walk to calm her head, she felt an odd sensation coming over her and suddenly she was in the air, flying. By the time she worked out how to get back down, she had put two and two together and realized she was a mutant, having known of her sister Blair’s mutation.
Although their family was accepting of Blair’s mutant powers (provided she didn’t spread the news around too much), Charity didn’t want to tell them of her new skill. Instead, she grabbed a bag while still in her gawdy wedding gown and rushed to tell Blair she was running away from marriage, her family and the travelling community. Much to Charity’s surprise, Blair decided to accompany her and the pair made a dash for the airport and New York.
They had been in New York for awhile before becoming seperated. With no way to contact each other as at that point neither of them had cell phones, Charity was left alone in the foreign city, longing for her sister. While wondering what she supposed to do, she was approached by Charles Xavier who had kept tabs on her after she had appeared with all her naiveity and fear in Cerebro. She was welcomed into the mansion where she began to have the education she had always longed for, and worked on her powers so she would be able to join the X-Men and find her sister.
