Full name: Professor Devlin Thomas
Alias: Prodigy
Age: 34
Birthday: 1st August 1976
Hometown: Edinburgh, Scotland
Appearance: Shaggy haired and youthful faced, Devlin doesn’t quite fit the stereotype of a university professor. With crystalline blue eyes, a Celtic skintone and sheer cheekbones, Devlin adopts a strange sort of handsomeness; he’s not traditionally attractive, but his extraordinary appearance makes him stand out amongst a bland crowd. Although Scottish born and bred, Devlin’s fashion sense is straight out of London’s fashion districts, with stylish, intriguing combinations that do nothing to make this fellow blend in. At 6'1", Devlin's form is narrow and tall, giving him a purposeful stride that intends to cut him clean through busy city streets.
Personality: Clever, is the best word to describe Devlin. He’s razor-sharp with both his tongue and his mind, and enjoys finding witty put-downs to use on the rest of society (usually his forgiving students.) He both loves interaction and loathes it, for he could just as easily be amongst a party crowd, while also locked away writing his next publication. Devlin doesn’t see himself as a social creature however, he believes he’s observing the world, which is an important factor for any (self-titled) genius. With his intelligence come delusions of grandeur. Devlin can often believe himself to be smarter than he is, which can be awfully wounding whenever he’s proven wrong. As a result, Devlin is prone to sulks and can find himself in quite a black mood if things haven’t gone his way. While living in London, Devlin shed his Scottish accent for a pitch-perfect southern tone, but he can switch between either accent without difficulty; an act that his friends find rather amusing. His Scottish burr has been disguised into a deep, smoky tone, both brisk and velvet all at once. For his faults, Devlin can be quite a charming man and indeed entertaining. When he’s not lost in his work, Devlin can be good company, providing his companion is on par..
Powers: Devlin has the power to control gravitational force fields, enabling him to change the weight of objects and disrupt their mass pull. He himself can attract objects to his body by changing his own force, and equally can cancel it out and make himself weightless. These powers allow him to manipulate the world around him in many different ways, but he has never tried more than cheap tricks, unless under the safe surroundings of his study.
History:
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Devlin has lived with his parents for most of his childhood. The middle brother of Alastair and Finlay, the three boys were all eventually enrolled into the same private school. Merchiston Academy was a boys only institution, and Devlin had little interaction with girls until he graduated and moved to London to begin study at Oxford University.
After several years of consistent study, Devlin completed his degree. He'd spent much of his life fine-tuning his intellect, and now he had the proof to show for it. With a PhD in Psychology of Science, Devlin was a man of theory, evidence and speculation. A man of observation and writing, and had spent much of his life working on such. At the age of 17, Devlin became a mutant, and his focus had shifted onto the phenomena that gripped America and completed his degree with an ambition to know more about the mutant world and what it meant to be gifted. After further years of professional research, Devlin continued his academic life by becoming a professor at the University of Oxford. Here, he was able to continuing his own studies by teaching others, and has held a post here for several years.
Typically, Devlin began to get restless with his day-to-day job, and wanted to really push his research in the realms of mutation. Deciding he needed to get right in the heart of the mutant world, he took a year out of his work at Oxford and set off America. Ready to write more than ever, Devlin was keen to explore all he could find out about mutantkind. He even adopted a mutant alias to try and fit in, committing himself to investigation until one day, he could publish his work and get the recognition he deserved.
If only it was that easy.
