Full name: Lucas Burnum Bishop
Alias: Bishop
Age: 31
Birthday: April 20th 1981
Hometown: Boston
Current Occupation: X-Man/Teacher at Xavier's
Appearance: Bishop stands at an intimidating 6'6", often with a stern expression on his features. He shaves his head completely but changes his facial hair with his moods. Muscular, he is traditionally handsome with a chiseled jaw and killer smile that no scar can stop from being infectious.
Personality: Bishop does not suffer fools gladly. Forged from hardship, he is serious and can thus come across as something of a spoilsport. He is hardworking and loyal, with a very firmly established moral code that reflects in his efforts to always help those in need.
Powers: Bishop can absorb most types of energy directed toward him. He can then re-channel it through his body for concussive blasts or in the same form that was absorbed but with twice the force. If he chooses not to reuse the energy directed at him, he can instead store it within himself, an action that allows him to heal at an accelerated rate.
History: Born into a poor household in Boston, Lucas and his younger sister Shard were often left to their own devices as their parents worked long hours for their meager pay. Law abiding and hardworking, they instilled clear ideas of right and wrong into their two children, ideas that they themselves would live by until their untimely deaths. One night, while walking home together late at night from their second jobs, Lucas' parents were gunned down in what the police would rule a random mob-initiation killing. The two Bishop children were of course devastated, and even the presence of their grandmother who moved in to raise them, offered them little comfort. Seeing how dark the world could be, Lucas lost all enthusiasm for school and sports, instead spending his days aimlessly wondering the shadier parts of the city, allowing his hatred to grow.
He was in his mid-teens when a glimmer of hope arrived in the darkness. He was skipping school when he was jumped upon by a gang member who tried to mug him. Lucas, who felt he had nothing to lose, refused to give in and ended up in a brawl with the gang member. Untrained and inexperienced, he came off the worse and was lying in the dirt when the gang member pulled out his gun. Bishop shut his eyes in what he expected to be his last moments and heard the shot ring out. But he was alive and unscathed - it was the gang member who was bleeding out, having been shot in the leg by a police officer. Once a medic had taken away the shot man and examined Lucas, the cop gave the troubled teen a lift home, all the while talking to him like his equal. It was the first time Lucas could ever remember being spoken to in such a way and it left a lasting impression. The next day he was back in school, working harder than ever and earning his way to a scholarship for college.
He would eventually join the police academy where he began to notice that he was not like the other cadets. His mutation had been present since the gun was pulled on him as a teenager, but it was only now he started to be aware of it and honed the skills in private, scared of retribution if he admitted his abilities. Caught up in his own affairs, he failed to notice his sister start to head down a slippery slope, introduced to drugs and violence by her boyfriend, Trevor Fitzroy. By the time Lucas earned his badge, she was a full-fledged junkie and all the advice her brother tried to give simply fell on deaf ears. His grandmother passed away within a week of his making the force.
Lucas' first real taste of the issues surrounding mutants was as a rookie cop, when he and his partner responded to a home invasion call at the Drake household. Seeing firsthand the destruction and power of mutants through Pyro's attack on the police, he began to wonder if there wasn't more that could be done to better merge the mutant and human societies without bloodshed. His research and education into such matters was stalled however when his sister almost overdosed. Receiving a desperate phonecall from Shard, Lucas rushed to her and after throwing Trevor out with more than a stern talking to, began to try and detox his sister. For five days he listened to her scream and cry, and even try to jump out of the window in her desperation for a hit. For five days he managed to stay strong and refuse to give in; but that was all the strength he had. On the sixth day, he stood, watching his sister lying on the bathroom floor, shivering and crying, and wondered if he was doing the right thing. Before he could even second-guess himself, he had acquired a few syringes of heroin, planning to give Shard just enough of a dose that he might wean her off more slowly. His sister was cunning however and, as Bishop dozed for just a minute, she stole the syringes and injected it all. Though he tried to stop her, Lucas was just a second too late and could do nothing but hold his sister as the life drained away.
Distraught, Lucas threw himself into work, earning the title of detective in record speed. It offered him little joy though with no one at home to celebrate it with. During the Legacy Virus scare, Lucas attempted to join the MBI but was refused entry and continued his work as a regular detective. When a gang war erupted in the city, Lucas himself went out on the streets to try and calm the situation, unaware that one of the gang leaders was the father of the boy who had once tried to kill him. Blaming Lucas for his son's death, the boss had him kidnapped during the chaos. It was no easy task and during the struggle, Lucas revealed his mutant powers, only furthering the boss' hatred of him. Kept in a warehouse for six months, Lucas was tortured repeatedly, hanging onto life by a thread offered by his powers. His officers searched for him, eventually tracking down his location. As they stormed the building, the boss extracted his final revenge - he branded an 'M' over Lucas' right eye, screaming the man's status as a mutant until the moment he was gunned down.
After being rescued, Lucas found himself discharged from the police force. Though they claimed it was due to the physiological damage he had suffered from his imprisonment and torture, Lucas suspected that it was really because he had been outed as a mutant. With no job and nowhere to go, Lucas again began to dream of a world with unity between mutants and humans. Searching for a place where he might make this dream a reality, he stumbled across the Xavier institute in New York and made his way there. For the past year he has been training at the school.
