Full Name: Arella Darcie Riviera
Alias: N/A
Age: 29
Birthday: November 19th 1983
Hometown: New York City, New York
Current Occupation: Agent in the MBI
Appearance: Standing at 5’7”, Arella is not exactly short but feels it after growing up with men who had the stance of basketball players. She has an intense look, with her malteser eyes standing out dramatically against her cocoa dust skin. Her hair is full and naturally low lighted to complement her eyes perfectly.
Personality: Arella, despite her rising position in society is still a street-kid at heart, and that is displayed in her ‘take no bullshit’ attitude to both her work and personal life. She can definitely take care of herself and makes sure people know that. Though she can come across as easily angered, it is more a form of self-preservation than any anger management issue.
Powers: Arella is human.
History: To say Arella was born into unlucky circumstances is perhaps an understatement. Her mother was a forever-aspiring model who made money in strip clubs as a dancer while her father moved from odd job to odd job, none of which ever bought in much money. Her elder brother had been born when her mother was just 19 and her father 21 and Arella had followed two years later. The night she had been born, her family were squatting in a house with many other families, half of which was being used as a safe-house for criminals - the other half as an illegal brothel. They had no way to get Arella’s mother to hospital when she went into labour, and even if they had, the family were completely without medical insurance so Arella was born in the grubby house.
Barely two hours after Arella’s birth, her mother was dead. She had been suffering from HIV (which luckily she did not pass on to either of her children) and she had not had the strength to survive what had been a difficult birth. Distraught by the loss of his first and only love, Arella’s father blamed his new daughter, naming her Arella Darcie, meaning together ’Angel of the Dark’ on the advice of an old lady squatting in the house. Scared of loosing his son if he took his partner to a hospital, Arella’s father and some of the men in the house buried her mother in a grave dug in the garden of the house. The whole spectacle was crude and the only grave marker was a cheap wedding ring Arella’s father had bought with the goal of wedding the mother of his children after Arella’s birth.
Leaving the house, the Rivieras took up residence in an abandoned and rather derelict house just outside of the city with the old woman from the squat. Arella’s presence was largely ignored by her father as she grew up and as he relied more and more on the whiskey, he became distant from his son as well. The old lady they had been bought up to call Grandma subjected the young Arella to harsh treatment and beatings, while turned more favourable attention on her brother. Feeling isolated, Arella would often skip school to wander aimlessly around the city and meet with boys she barely knew in the hope of finding some sort of acceptance.
Eventually, at age fifteen, she met Montgomery De La Croix, a well connected police officer who felt he needed to give back to the poorer communities he had grown up in. He met Arella in a park and sympathised with her position, stating that he would help her get a job if she worked hard and finished high school. Arella was at first sceptical but when she saw Monty help her brother pass his classes and scout for colleges, she eventually accepted his help.
Their father resented Monty’s involvement in the Riviera children’s upbringing but was often too incapable to do anything about it. When Arella was seventeen, and her brother had gone away to college, her father finally snapped. When she came in that day with Monty to go over her work, her father attacked Monty, beating him badly until Arella hit him over the head with a vase and knocked him out. ‘Grandma’ had witness the entire scene and slapped Arella for her attack on her father and the girl finally realised that she couldn’t stay there any longer. She called one of Monty’s friends for help and they all retreated to Monty’s loft apartment where Arella officially moved in.
As he recovered from his beating, Monty and Arella grew closer and despite their age gap of fourteen years, the relationship turned romantic. As Arella studied hard and attended university, Monty became more and more disillusioned by his job as a police officer to the point that he frequently considered quitting. Instead, he vented his anger in brawls in his brother’s bar that did nothing to make Arella’s life more stable.
When her brother finished university, he came back to New York and worked for the NYFD, taking great pride in his position. He had grown up a lot in his time away and had emerged as a model citizen that made Arella convinced she could do the same. Finishing her university course, she joined the FBI and worked hard there to overthrow the prejudices against her. Eventually her team came to value her but Arella’s happiness was short lived.
When protests on mutant rights had broken out in the city, her brother had been called out to deal with the fire on scene and lost his life while trying to defend both the humans and mutants in attendance. Arella was naturally heart-broken and took to her bed in despair, leaving Monty again feeling isolated. Turning to fighting more and more often, he finally met his match in a mutant opponent. The fight quickly turned personal and Monty was left in a coma in which he still lays. All alone in the world, Arella needed to lay the blame on someone and the mutants were a group perfect to take that fall. When asked if she would like to transfer to the MBI to register the people who had robbed her of her existence, she said yes straight away.
