Appearance: Sam stands at 6’1” and has a very solid, muscular build. He’s not a very fashionable individual and instead favors comfort over looks. He tends to wear a lot of tee shirt, flannel button ups, and jeans.
Personality: Sam’s a very sweet, kind, and polite individual. He’s comfortable and effective in leadership positions but after so many years of having to take charge, he’s more than happy to let someone else take charge and assume the role of being the boss.
Powers: Sam is currently rendered human, and has been since the cure first came out. Unlike most mutants, where it faded after time, Sam’s dose, for whatever reason, never did. His previous mutant powers had been the ability to bodily generates thermo-chemical energy and release it from his skin, thus causing his body to propel through the air.
History: Sam was the first born to Thomas and Lucinda Guthrie, a pair of hardworking, polite and loving parents who went on to have nine more children after Sam was born. Despite the lack of financial success that the Guthrie family had, they always managed to make just enough to get by, and were fairly close knit.
Growing up as the oldest of ten children, Sam quickly learned how to take control and be an effective leader, though he was hardly a loud and bossy individual. With his parents both working two jobs, a lot of responsibility often fell on Sam’s shoulders. He was the one to make sure everyone had their homework done; that dinner was on the table, and the chores for around the house got done. As his siblings grew older, the responsibility was shared amongst the elder half of the Guthrie clan.
When Sam was fifteen, his father, who had taken a second job working in the nearby coalmines, had died in a collapse. The loss of his father sent the family into a time of not only mourning, but also in financial distress. Despite his mother’s protests, Sam dropped out of high school and also began to work in the same coalmines that had killed his father.
It was around this time when Sam’s mutant powers first had emerged. It hadn’t been a traumatic event which triggered the manifestation his powers, but instead a result of tripping over his own feet while doing work around the Guthrie’s farm. He was suddenly propelled into the air, only to land unscathed on the ground. It was only after this happened a handful more of times that Sam went to his mom about it.
Lucinda was shocked by her son’s powers, but nonetheless supportive and concerned over his wellbeing. Not really knowing how to help her son through this, she found out about the Xavier Institute. Of course Sam protested about going; his family needed his income and his help around the house, but Lucinda kept insisting, knowing that her eldest child had already sacrificed so much for the sake of the family. So after much debate, it was decided that Sam would attend.
And he did attend, for three years. Despite having dropped out of school back in Kentucky, Sam worked hard and managed to graduate in the spring after he turned eighteen. He excelled in any English classes he had taken over the years, and fell in love with a large variety of literature.
After his graduation, Sam opted to not return to Kentucky. His mother had sold the farm, finding the income from it not worth all the hard work, and had managed to complete nursing courses as well as remarried while Sam had been away, to a loving and successful diner owner in their hometown of Cumberland. They were financially stable, and Lucinda continued to encourage her son to further his education. So, Sam applied to a variety of colleges in a variety of states and locations, before he finally settled on attending Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts.
It was while attending BU that Sam met Lila Jones, a fellow English major who had come from Vermont to Boston for college. The pair fell into the same group of friends, and it wasn’t long before they began to date. Lila was a strong personality; a force to be reckoned with, and it was established early on that she clearly wore the pants in the relationship.
Throughout college, Lila and Sam continued to date. After they graduated, they moved in together, and Sam began to save up for an engagement ring. She knew of Sam’s powers, and though she wasn’t anti-mutant, but she didn’t really encourage Sam to use his powers.
Over the next few years, the pair wed and made the move to New York, where they took over a bookstore, the previous owners having retired and moved to Florida. It was around this time that the cure came out, and Lila encouraged Sam to take it. She argued that it was the safer option; that their business, their own personal reputations, and the birth of their child, one which Lila just found out she was pregnant with, would then never be effected by Sam’s mutation. Besides, she pointed out, he never even really used his powers. He wasn’t saving the universe with it, and he really wasn’t using it on a day-to-day basis. Not wanting to cause a fight, Sam decided to go with it; he got himself the cure.
A few months later, Lila gave birth to the first and only child born to the couple; a girl whom they named Eden. And for a while, everything seemed to be going well in Sam’s life. Their bookstore was thriving, Sam was happily in love with Lila, and Eden was a happy, healthy baby who was growing more and more each day. Everything was working out just perfectly until suddenly it wasn’t.
More and more reports of mutants who had taken the cure and suddenly had their powers back, were surfacing all over the news. Sam kept waiting for the day when his powers would return, and nothing. He kept trying to jumpstart them, and yet nothing. Sam went to doctors; even saw Xavier about it, and it seemed that Sam was permanently cured; he was now a human.
It was around Eden’s fourth birthday that Lila suddenly came to him, wanting a divorce. She was unhappy, she claimed. She didn’t want to run the bookstore; didn’t want to be married to Sam, and had in fact found someone else. The news that his marriage was over hit Sam like a ton of bricks, right in the gut. What made it worse, was the fact that he never even saw it coming.
Trying to move on with his life, the divorce between himself and Lila is still being finalized. Currently Sam resides in Brooklyn, still owning and running not only the bookstore he and Lila had run together, Guthrie’s Books, as well as working as a sort of ‘book doctor’ out of the back of the shop.
