Appearance: Along with a couple of her sibling, Shelby is said to have inherited her maternal grandfather's rich brown eyes and is a natural brunnette. She's been slender her whole life, having that wonderful ability to eat whatever she wants and never gain more than a pound or two, bringing her to about one hundred and twenty three pounds wet. She's the shortest of her family at five foot three inches tall, but doesn't mind and rarely ever wears heels to rectify it. When she's not in scrubs, Shelby usually wears whatever she finds comfy at the time.
Personality: In her line of work, Shelby is a very caring and compassionate person; maternal almost. Always checking on her patients and depending on their age; bringing them presents from the gift shop. Outside of the hospital, Shelby is a foul mouthed individual who has a habit of speaking her mind whether or not her opinion is needed. One thing for sure, no matter how much she likes Harry Potter or Star Wars, she is not at all shy about her geek status.
Powers: None, human.
History: Randall and Ramona were High School sweethearts and unlike a lot of their peers, their relationship surpassed the usual statistics. They moved in together right after High School and then proceeded to go to the same college where they went into different fields. Randall wanted to be an astrophysicist and Ramona liked the thought of becoming a nurse. However, during her Junior year she became pregnant and instead went into Medical Administration.
Being pressured into marriage from both of their parents, Randall and Ramona had a shot-gun wedding before she gave birth to Forrest Michael Braverman followed by Wylda Ruth, Dexter Anthony, Shelby Ramona, Rachel Johanna, Hattie Leigh, and Perry John.
Shelby was the fourth born and with so many dramatic siblings, she was often forgotten or ignored, which was fine by her. Shelby liked to be alone; liked to be able to sit and enjoy a book or just be by herself. Her siblings didn't quite understand, and though her father probably would have, he was so busy with work he didn't notice.
She was only eight years old when her parents decided to get a divorce and it completely rocked Shelby's world. The parting had been amicable and they settled on split custody, neither wanting to take their children from their mother or father. Shelby didn't understand why her parents had split, and she hated every man her mother went out with, finally going to her mom when she was thirteen and asking to live with her father full time.
Living with her father seemed to be easier, it was just the two of them unless one of her brothers or sisters decided they wanted 'dad time'. It was also easier for Shelby to throw herself into her schoolwork. Graduating High School early at sixteen with a 4.0. GPA, and finally gaining her father's attention. However, as much as Randall wanted Shelby to join his doctorial field, Shelby had other plans.
While her peers were going to parties and getting drunk, Shelby was sneaking into the city Library and getting her hands on every medical book she could find. Still unsure of what medical department she wished to attend, Shelby contacted her Uncle Clarke in Ghana thinking that some volunteer work might get her to pick one and stick with it
Shelby hadn't been ready for the culture shock. As much as she read about the poverty, health, and education issues; it was a hell of a lot different when you were standing in the middle of it. Shelby wasn't given a lot of time to adjust. Quickly being put to work after being shown the room she would be staying in. The opportunities in Volta Region were endless and Shelby found herself straying from medical every once and a while, mostly to help educate the Ewe children; teaching them ABCs and 123s.
It was a typical morning, playing soccer with some of the kids when her Uncle called for her. Entering the 'surgery room', she was surprised when Clarke sat her between a woman's legs, the sight horrifying and yet her mind became a little clear. Clarke had prepared her for this the last few weeks, since the woman now laid out before them was the only pregnant woman in the village. With Clarke and his intern Anderson Scott there to encourage her, Shelby delivered the baby. The infant however, was born with Gastroschisis and she stood there watching as her Uncle did surgery on the poor thing.
That was all it took for Shelby to decide. And with Anderson's help, Shelby picked out a few colleges, but was set on one. Anse - as she had taken to call Anderson - had gone to Northwestern. The way he talked about it sold her. Anderson was a bit of a shy guy, but Shelby formed a crush on him during the rest of her stay in Ghana. Nothing ever came of it, though. He was thirteen years older than her and she knew it wasn't right.
Shelby arrived home in enough time to receive her letters. She'd been accepted to all four colleges she applied to, but Northwestern was it. Four years and a major in biology later, Shelby got her foot into Weill Cornell Medical College with her goal to major in pediatric surgery. It was at college that she became good friends with Marta Baines. In fact, aside from Anse in Ghana, Marta was her only friend, having been a bit of a geek in High School and a freak among the geeks.
Just before graduating medical school, Shelby surprisingly bumped into Anse. He was now a general surgeon and had continued traveling to rural countries to help those who were less fortunate, but he finally accepted a position as an attending general surgeon at Lenox Hill. The pair started off meeting for coffee and it wasn't long before they dove into a relationship, getting married in the middle of Shelby's residency. And, of course, Marta was her witness/Maid of Honor during the small ceremony with the Justice of the Peace.
Shelby is now working at New York Presbyterian Hospital after having completed her residency, where she is a pediatric surgeon who specializes in neonatal surgery.
