Full name: Alec Giovanni Godfrey
Alias: The Incredible Giovanni/The Carny
Age: 36
Birthday: 30th January 1977
Hometown: Shelburne, New Hampshire
Occupation: Drug dealer and runner of the Funhouse
Appearance: While originally well-groomed and handsome, Alec now appears far more dishevelled. Madness clearly glints in his dark eyes and his hair is often unwashed and unbrushed. He goes almost everywhere in his badly tattered tail coat from his magic days, teaming it with grubby shirts and ripped pants. Still walking with a limp, he has a black cane with a silver handle that he always carries with him.
Personality: Alec cares about himself, and himself only. Unhinged and full of dark images, he is not someone you would care to anger. He treats 'his' children like slaves and cares very little for their well being. Although he has fallen from grace, he still believes he deserves a level of respect and awe, though he does not show these for anyone else.
Powers: Alec has the power to create powerful illusions for a great amount of time without extreme concentration. His illusions appear so realistic that he is normally the only one who can tell the difference.
History: Born the only child to Richard Godfrey, a Catholic priest, and Laura Godfrey, a homemaker, in the small town of Shelburne in the White Mountains, Alec's first years were lonely. Naturally shy and warned off adventure by his father, the child had difficulty making friends and so would often sit on his own, teaching himself card tricks when his parents were not around and reading the Bible when they were. When Alec began to show an interest and sympathy for the story of Lucifer, however, his father pushed him to socialize, setting up all sorts of play dates with other local children. Smaller and shyer than most, Alec was picked on frequently by the other children and scolded harshly by his parents for the bedwetting the teasing caused.
When Alec realised that the other children found card tricks awfully impressive, his days in the corner came to an abrupt halt. He was able to captivate the boys that had once been his bullies and spent hours learning and constructing new tricks to show off. Unfortunately it didn't help with the bedwetting, and Alec was almost fifteen before he was able to shift the habit. By this point, he was already certain of what he wanted to do with his life and resolved to be a stage magician rather than follow in his father's shoes and go into seminary school. The tricks Alec designed were all complex and expensive to build to the point of absurdity and all contained dark overtones of hell and demons. When his mother found the drawings he had stowed under his mattress, she had called his father and the pair had started to scream and shout at their son. It was now that Alec's mutation developed and his parents saw their only child morph into a demon before their very eyes. He was thrown from the house and disowned immediately.
Somehow he made his way to New York where he hung around the stage door of a dingy theatre, pestering magicians after their shows until one finally started to take notice of him. The magician's name was Egmont Black and while most others ignored the scruffy teen, he saw something in Alec and took him under hs wing. Through Egmont, Alec learnt about showmanship and his designs grew and took life on Egmont's tour. For several years, Alec followed wherever his mentor went, watching as the magician performed stage after stage, dreaming of the day when he could do the same. But behind the sparks and white rabbits, Egmont was falling apart and seemed hell-bent on taking Alec with him. Every dressing room the pair kept was constantly littered with every form of drug imaginable, so it was no surprise when Egmont eventually died from an overdose. With his tutor gone, Alec began to establish himself as a magician and started to develop the powers he had displayed on being thrown out of his home.
Within a few years, a combination of his mutant skills and showmanship earned Alec a good reputation in the magic world as he toured under the name 'The Incredible Giovanni'. His tricks were like nothing anyone had ever seen before and soon his reputation, and his fortune, grew. However, Alec had learned nothing from Egmont's overdose, and continued to take drugs, though they left him paranoid and easy to anger. One night, following a sell-out performance, Alec, high at the time, sauntered into a bar a few doors down from his show. Impressed members of the crowd kept a drink in his hand all night, until he made the mistake of revealing his greatest secret, that of his mutation. While in some places, this would simply ruin the magic of the show, the small town Alec was performing in that night was deeply religious and aggressively anti-mutant. Too high and drunk to create an illusion strong enough to distract them, Alec was pulled into the street and harshly beaten, left to die in a pool of his own blood.
To this day, he doesn't know who pulled him from the dirt and dropped him at a local hospital, but he owes them his life. Suffering an extreme amount of broken bones, fractures and cuts, Alec spent two weeks in and out of conciousness. His body eventually healed, but the doctors worried he had sustained some permanent brain damage, unaware of his previous worrying behaviours. When he insisted to be discharged, the doctors had no choice but to let Alec leave. His reputation as a magician now permanently ruined, and with nowhere to call home, he returned to New York where he had first found luck. By now, mutants were all over the news as Magneto led his crusade against the cure and Alec came to realise there may be new opportunities for his skills in the city. It didn't take him long to set up his new plan. Walking the street in his now tattered top hat and tails, he began collecting children for his enterprise, earning himself the nickname 'The Carny' amongst the children of District X for the way he came one day and disappeared the next, a new group of runaways trailing after him like he was the Pied Piper.
Soon Alec had a small army of orphans and abandoned mutant children that he set up in an abandoned shop and apartment in District X. Painting it with reds and golds and pictures of clowns, it became known as the Funhouse, though hardly lived up to its jovial name. Alec's children were sent on missions to rob cure distributors and any other drug companies they could get into, many dying on the earlier missions. From there, they became mules to transport the looted goods, often getting beaten up by older dealers who too were getting into the cure business. But Alec didn't care, he oversaw his little empire from his room in the Funhouse, slowly getting more and more out of touch with reality.
And this is where he has stayed, atop his throne in District X, now overseeing much of the areas drug trade and still followed by a troupe of children, like a Fagin character.
