Full Name: Perdita Lydia Georgiou (Simpson)
Alias: Athena
Birthday: June 23rd 1990 | Twenty-Three
Hometown: Delphi, Greece
Current Occupation: Bar Singer
Appearance: Despite being petite in stature, all of Perdita's features are exaggerated. She has wide eyes and broad grin, defined by quite sharp cheekbones, creating a rather striking appearance. She inherited her colouring from her mother and so despite being Greek by birth, she has quite pale, English-rose skin. Her hair is naturally dirty-blonde, but she has recently dyed it an auburn-y brown colour, which has incidentally made her smokey green eyes appear more hazel.
Personality: Rather quiet and reserved, a stranger might wonder if Perdita can talk at all. She has learnt to keep herself to herself and keep her emotions underwraps. While it may make her seem cold, Perdita is actually rather caring but cautious as to how a caring nature can be exploited. Having grown up in 'captivity', she can find a lot of things about the hustle and bustle of city life rather frightening.
Powers: Perdita's powers are a complex matter, rooted in knowledge. When Perdita touches an item, she gains a knowledge of its working and occasionally glimpses of its history. This does not mean by touching something electrical for instance, that she will be able to rattle off the exact scientific nature of the thing but rather a wisdom as to its general existence and state. For people, Perdita gains a basic understanding of their nature and personality, very occasionally sharing the most extreme of their memories.
History: Born the second child to Altair and Helena Georgiou, Perdita's early years were charmed. She and her older brother Thomas received the best of educations and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle in their Delphic home. Their English mother, once a classics lecturer, curated the local museum, while their Greek father earned a good income as a popular GP. What the children remained unaware of however was their mother's activism. As a telepath, she petitioned and fought against mutant discrimination, which bought her to the attention of a group called 'The Cult of the Twelve' that had been growing in the region.
The cult believed that mutants represented a 'second coming' of Greece's great mythological Gods and spirits, and had slowly begun to snatch known mutants to enact their beliefs. Run by a mutant known as Hades, the cult had established itself in Olympia where it had built itself a marble safe-haven, built up of various small citadels.
Helena Georgiou's public work had put her and her children in the cult's sights and, when the children were ten and seven, Hades led them to the family's home in Delphi. However, all they found were empty beds as Helena had grown wary of such a threat and fled with her family to Pylos, where they lived in hiding for three years.
But Hades had followers with strong powers and strong connections and eventually learned the location of the Georgious. The cult struck in the middle of the night, slaying Altair as he tried to fight them, stealing away his wife and children to Olympia. Upon arrival, Helena was deemed to be of significant value and was taken to one of the higher citadels, screaming for the twins. As the children were too young to display any mutations, Hades had them sent into the lower citadel to live among the other children and mutants with 'lesser powers'.
The children were homed with a woman named Lorna, whose husband had been dragged off to the higher citadel to perform a duty as Hermes for Hades' growing Parthenon of Olympic Gods. Lorna had children of her own but she treated the Georgiou children as family and they were well cared for. The cult were not sadistic or unkind and the children were given educations of a high standard. Even the lesser mutants were regarded as nymphs or heroes by the humans in the cult and so enjoyed a level of respect despite their slavery.
Despite this, the children still lived in fear. They knew how important it was to develop mutant powers before the spring of their sixteenth birthday, or a darker fate awaited them. While some humans from the lower citadel joined the cult itself and worked for Hades, the majority were taken to Sounion to be discarded. Though the exact happenings were unknown, rumours flew that the discarded were injected with large amounts of heroin so when they were discovered, their stories were put down to the ramblings of an addict.
The Georgiou children had fate on their side, however, and both developed mutations within days of their fifteenth birthdays. Thomas' power of empathy relegated him to stay in the lower citadel but Perdita's powers sparked a great interest in Hades. When she was sixteen, Perdita was taken from her brother and sent to the higher citadel with her foster sister as a hand maid. She was presented to a court of 'Gods' but amongst them could not see her mother. Hades placed a gold diadem on her head and called her 'the young Athena' as the elder woman bearing a similar title glowered.
From then on, Perdita was treated as a Goddess - given the finest clothes and meals she had ever seen. She was trained in skills Hades demanded she acquire and excelled, much to the annoyance of the elder Athena. Kept from the lower citadels, all Perdita could do was obey and pray her brother was well.
But Thomas wasn't staying as well behaved as his sister. He and a small group of rebels were plotting their escape, and when Perdita was just about to hit nineteen - the group stormed the upper citadels. It was carnage as mutants faced mutants and soon the whole location was shaking. Somehow, amidst the chaos, Thomas found Perdita and the two fled, unable to stop for their foster family.
They made their way North, staying away from civilisation as best they could to keep out of Hades' reach. Each of the twins reinvented themselves, with Perdita fashioning herself as Polly and vowing to lead a simpler life while Thomas brooded, unable to move on from the ordeal his family had been through. He would disappear for hours into the cities, gathering information on mutants and came to be obsessed with the Brotherhood. He rarely spoke of them to his sister though, as she was horrified at the idea of joining another group now that they were finally free.
Their bliss following the escape was not destined to last though as the elder Athena tracked them for Hades, fuelled by her hate for Perdita. Eventually the jealous woman and her cohorts found the twins and ambushed them - desperate to return them to the floundering cult. The siblings held their own for as long as they could, but eventually Thomas was grabbed. Perdita reached for him and as their fingers brushed, their secondary mutation flourished. As they maintained contact, they could hear the other's loudest thoughts. Thomas' mind screamed New York before he was dragged back and his voice started to scream 'run'.
With few options left, Perdita left her brother again and fled, heading for New York where she prayed Thomas would come and rescue her. Having no money and no paperwork, her options were limited. Perdita drifted, busking as a singer to get enough change to eat but not achieving much else. Eventually a man by the name of Robert Simpson stumbled across the lost girl and fell in love with her on the spot. Simpson was a jack-of-all-trades kind of a man, with gambling debts up to his ears and his chances of success long gone. He watched Perdita sing on her street corner and dreamed of making her his wife and then a dazzling superstar.
He approached Perdita and offered to buy her dinner. Starving, Perdita accepted and found that Robert's company was strangely comforting. When he proposed the idea of getting her a few gigs singing in bars, she agreed, as it was better than street corners and subway stations. They fell into a routine, of Perdita singing in some dodgy club before having dinner with Robert and sleeping on his couch. This continued for a few months before Robert came up with another proposal, this time one of marriage. Shocked, Perdita felt like she had little choice but to agree. She was in the country illegally and had no one else but Robert to turn to. And besides, he was kind, and she did like him, if not love him.
The pair ran off to Mexico, where Robert paid for forged documents to say he'd spent the past two years there working. They married in a little chapel in Mexico and returned to the United States. Now legally married, they were subjected to a long interview process to see if their marriage was 'legit'. Robert's forged documents made it seem like they had been together for a couple of years and Robert's love and Perdita's gratefulness seemed to convince the government that their marriage was the real deal and they issued Perdita with a Green Card.
Moving back to New York, Perdita was disheartened to have no news from her brother but was given little time to dwell on it. Robert secured her a regular singing job at a bar in the city, just on the outskirts of District X that kept her busy every night, while Robert himself took long and erratic shifts at a car-parts factory. Their lives were busy and their apartment small, but for once Perdita felt safe, if not exactly happy. The routine was dull, that was, until Perdita met August Potter.
August was a regular at the bar where she sang, but Perdita had never spoken to anyone aside from the people who worked there. Robert had stressed how dangerous the neighborhood could be, and insisted that she hire a cab every night from a company in Manhattan, wait inside for it to arrive and then go straight home. However, one night, Perdita found her wallet empty. Things were difficult for Robert on the money front and she had been unwilling to hassle him for more and so decided that she would simply walk home. She'd heard that District X was a mutant area and was relatively confident that she wouldn't be hassled among her 'own people'.
Sadly, Perdita's mutation wasn't exactly obvious so when she was seen leaving the club, she was instantly tailed by a group of pre-teens from the local 'Funhouse'. The kids didn't attack her, but they began harassing her, trying to sell their drugs and unwilling to go without a sale. For Pedita, who was pretty easy to scare, this was an unbearable ordeal and she felt panicked and trapped. Luckily, August appeared on the scene and with a couple of words, ensured the kids, who recognized him from his own time at the Funhouse, would not bother Perdita again. Seeing as Perdita was still shaken up, August took her back to the bar to have a drink and calm down. They ended up sat there most of the night, sharing stories and experiences.
For Perdita, it was like her black-and-white world had exploded into colour, and she found herself feeling the passion and excitement that she'd never had in her marriage to Robert. It took a little while for her guilt and loyalty to be overcome, but soon enough she and August were embroiled in an affair. Part of Perdita wishes to leave Robert but she feels too guilty after the kindness he has shown her, and is worried that a divorce would see her deported to Greece and the life she is hiding from. So instead, she leads a double-life; one of duty with Robert, and one of love with August.
