Contains X-Men Origins: Wolverine spoilers!
Name: Logan (formerly James Howlett)
Alias: Wolverine
Age: 157
Nationality: Canadian
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Hazel
Height: 6'2" *
Appearance: From coarse facial hair to rugged leather jackets, everything about Logan is gritty, harsh and masculine. He’s stuck in his ways and his style of dress, often wearing tight-fitted jeans and white vests. All of his clothes have seen better days, but he really couldn't care less. With looks as wild as he is, Logan adopts untameable hair and impressive muscles that does nothing to give off hope of a cultivated man.
Personality: Logan is as rough as he looks, but has a strong code of honour and morality, despite how easily he seems to be able to attack and kill. He’s a loner at heart and very private. Whilst he can manage a polite conversation, Logan’s sarcasm and bitterness often show through. He is torn over who he really is, due to losing his memory over fifteen years ago. Slowly, things have been revealed over time, but he is still far away from knowing who exactly ‘Wolverine’ is. At the moment, however, he has stopped searching quite so hard for his past, after discovering more than he really wanted to know when he confronted William Stryker at Alkali Lake.
Powers: Logan has an accelerated healing factor, which enables adamantium claws to penetrate through his knuckles without lasting medical issues as well as protect him from disease and toxins. His entire skeleton is coated in this indestructible metal, including his skull, which gives his attacks increased weight and force. The combination of his healing factor and adamantium skeleton enables him to lift weights greater than a normal human could withstand.
Logan also has an acute sense of smell, vision and hearing, enabling him to track targets by scent, as well as hear more than the ordinary human and over great distances. His exemplary sight grants him supreme clarity and is near perfect in the dark. His regenerative capabilities dramatically reduces the impact of age on his body, and gives him the appearance and vitality of a man in his prime.
Logan is prone to a 'berserker rage' if pushed enough during close combat. In these fits of fury, he turns merciless and animalistic, fighting with wild aggression and is even more resistant to attacks. He does not enjoy these intense states, but acknowledges that they can be life-saving.
History: What Logan knows of his backstory is limited at best, since he woke up with amnesia, adamantium claws and a dogtag. He had no memories of who he was or what he was, and fled for shelter.
However, Logan's history is vast prior to this date, beginning in 1835 where he was born as James and raised by the wealthy John and Elizabeth Howlett. He had a very sickly childhood, often coming down with illnesses and infections, but he would always manage to recover. One night while ten year old James was recovering from another sickness, Thomas Logan, the groundskeeper arrived at the manor in a drunken rage and shot John Howlett dead. The trauma activated James' mutation and bones claws tore from his knuckles. Overcome by an unrecognisable rage, the normally frail boy stabbed Thomas in the chest, whom in his dying breath admitted that he was in fact his father. Victor Creed, Thomas' other son, fled the scene with young James, as he understood the brutality of their similar mutations.
Together, they survived for over a century, getting their violent thirst for revenge against a world that feared them. They both fought in the American Civil War and both World Wars, but it was during the Vietnam War that James and Victor were sentenced to death by a firing squad. Victor had killed a man whom had stopped his rape attempt, but James was too loyal to his half brother to not defend him. They were executed, but consequently survived, bringing their incredible immortality to the attention of William Stryker. He was recruiting for a group of mutants called Team X. The black-ops were led by Stryker and ran alongside the CIA to carry out investigations and eliminate crime rings; however, their methods were often questionable, for bloodshed was normally all that lay in their wake. Eventually, it was these type of situations that caused James to leave, making him separate from Victor after over 130 years of brotherly companionship.
During the next six years, James moved to Canada, changing his name to Logan in a bid to put his bloodied past behind him. After a couple of years alone, he met and eventually settled down with a woman named Kayla Silverfox. As two decided to live together in a log cabin in the Canadian woodland, Logan's life had finally taken a good turn, and he spent his days working as a lumberjack in the Rockies. However, Stryker had been hunting Logan ever since he left Team X and upon finding him, warned him that someone was killing the others members one by one. Logan refused to help him, however, and days later he recognised Victor in his midst. Victor apparently murdered Kayla, ensuing a brutal fight between the two men which left Logan almost dead.
Stryker stepped up to offer Logan the weapons he needed to kill Victor and Logan signed up for an adamantium bonding process, an indestructible metal that would cover every inch of his skeleton. It was before this procedure that Logan requested that his new dogtags said 'Wolverine' in memory of Kayla and her stories. The process was indescribable agony and he died briefly during the procedure. Upon recovery, he heard Stryker's plans to erase his memory and burst free in a bloodthirsty rage. He fled Alkali Lake, bloodstained and naked, where he was to lie low and experience the new adamantium skeleton his body now held. His escape began Stryker's chase to destroy his failed Weapon X, resulting in murders and carnage as Logan battled to escape his clutches.
He reunited with John Wraith and Fred Dukes, old Team X members who informed him about Three Mile Island and Stryker's history of experimentation on mutants. They pointed him in the direction of Remy LeBeau, a previous captive of the facility. Logan, accompanied by John, headed to New Orleans to find the Cajun mutant, whom mistakenly believed Logan was trying to return him to the Island and attacked him. Victor arrived in the scene during this time, killing John Wraith. Logan battled him once more, and with his new strength, almost killed his brother. Victor managed to escape, and Remy, now convinced of Logan's honesty, agreed to take him to Three Mile Island to find Stryker.
Upon arriving at the facility, he discovered that Kayla and Sabretooth had been working for Stryker all along, and that Kayla's death had been faked to give him the drive to receive the adamantium bonding. Kayla insisted that despite the blackmail with her sister and the use of her controlling emotional powers, she had truly fallen in love with him. Logan refused to believe her, and it was only as he turned to depart that he heard Victor attack Kayla in a rage and he ran back to fight him off, once more almost killing the man. Realising his lingering love for Kayla, he promised to help her find her sister, Emma Frost and together they freed all the trapped mutants in the compound, including a young Scott Summers.
But, Stryker wasn't finished, and sent out his new creation, Deadpool, a previous Team X member whom had been grossly experimented upon to create the ultimate weapon. Logan and Victor teamed up to defeat Weapon XI and after aided by Remy, separated after the victory. Logan returned to Kayla, whom had been shot in the escape, and tried to carry her to safety. Stryker, however, was determined to destroy Logan and shot at his skull with adamantium bullets. He collapsed unconscious upon impact, but later awoke with amnesia caused by the brain damage. His memories were in ruins, not even knowing who he was aside from the dogtags around his neck. Dismissing Remy, and the seemingly deceased Kayla, Logan departed from Three Mile Island, alone and lost and having no idea of who he was.
Instinctively, Logan returned to Canada, where he lived out the next fifteen years alone, making do with cash prizes from cage-fighting rings and living rather cheaply in an old camper van. He had many questions regarding the metal claws in his hands and his amnesia, and he continued to search for answers, but there was no one to turn to and he had only the dogtag and his increasingly erratic nightmares as clues.
By chance, he met another mutant called Rogue during one of his evenings fighting. He rather reluctantly offered to give her a ride to the next city when they were ambushed by a very different Victor Creed, whom now went by the name of Sabretooth. Logan didn't recognise his brother, and in turn, nor did Sabretooth. Logan was knocked out in the fight, and later woke up to find himself at Xavier's Institute. With his memories often harrowingly depicting laboratories, waking up in one did not sit easy with Logan, and after almost attacking Jean Grey and prowling around the mansion, he finally met Charles Xavier and learned more about the facility.
Logan has more or less remained at the mansion since, fighting with the X-Men and becoming a valued member of the team. He has helped them defeat the Brotherhood on several occasions, becoming closer to Rogue as a result. He was reunited with Sabretooth during a battle at Liberty Island, which resulted in him tossing his unknown half-brother off the top of the statue and leaving him for dead. A later mission led him back to Alkali Lake and an older William Stryker. His memories have been a little clearer since visiting the compound and talking to the man who gave him his skeleton, but they remain very patchy and Logan remains to know little about his life before his memories were erased. Logan still doesn't know how he got involved with that man, or why he had been chosen to receive the 'upgrades', as doesn't believe that he volunteered for the procedure.
After the third downfall of Magneto and Logan's murder of Jean Grey, whom he admitted to have fallen in love with, he was found to be straying from the mansion again, which at the time had suffered many losses, including the Professor and Scott. Logan only managed to convince himself to stay put when it was discovered that they weren't deceased. However, Logan has still left for Canada on a number of occasions, occasionally overcome with urges to return there, some instinct inside him telling him it is his rightful home. It was during one of these trips that Logan discovered the X-Men were fighting a big battle without him, and feeling guilty for his departure and angry for not being called to the front line, he returned home. For now, he has put his desire to find out about his past behind him, deciding to concentrate on what he has and making sure he has a future worth living, rather than a past he might regret learning.
At the moment, he is managing to remain rooted to the mansion to help the X-Men stay safe during the Legacy Virus outbreak and the resulting Mutant Registration Act.
Other: Logan is an intergral part of the Institute, for as well as being a member of the X-Men, he also teaches the art class.
