Full name: Hanna St. James
Alias: N/A
Age/DOB: Eighteen | August 5th, 1995.
Hometown: Oak Park, Illinois.
Family:
Martin 'Marty' St. James - Father
Robin St. James - Mother
Marion St. James - Paternal Aunt
Appearance: Hanna is five feet and eight inches tall; not freakish by any sort of circumstances, but her height definitely takes her out of the ‘petite’ category. Her hair, a naturally brown, has turned more golden over the years thanks to various trips to the salon. Her hair is fairly long, and has been this way for as long as she remembers, though the style, in which she wears it, varies. Sometimes it’s pulled back into a ponytail, while other times it’s worn simply down.
Personality: Hanna has a pretty take charge, passionate personality. She served as class president and captain of the cheerleading squad, and despite how quiet and shy she can be when it comes to large groups of people in social settings, when it comes to her extracurricular she's very take charge. She's a very good listener, and despite the tiny teenager rebellious acts she might perform every now and then, just wants to please her parents and make them proud. She hates disappointing and letting those she loves down.
Powers: Hanna has the ability to locate any person. This power works better with people who she knows closely, though she can locate strangers if she has a possession of the person that she’s looking for. Sometimes she only gets flashes of images; as if she’s having a vision or something. Other times, if she’s looking for someone she knows, she can see them in a mirror, like she’s watching a movie of the person, with the mirror acting as a TV screen.
History: Hanna had always done the right thing. She went to school, did her homework, was home by curfew and always told her parents where she was going and who she was with. She hung out with the ‘right’ sort of people; those who were definitely going places and would carry on the family legacy of living wealthy, successful, scandal free lives. Of course her life was hardly perfect. Behind the closed doors of the St. James household she would fight and bicker with her parents. She got an A, they wondered why it wasn’t an A+? She wanted to wear a strapless, navy dress and her mother wondered why she didn’t like the pale pink, ruffle-y number? Hanna and her friends would go out to the occasional Friday night, post football game party, drink cheap beer, and wander back to whoever had a parent free house to sleep off their tipsiness. All in all, she was a fairly typical teenager. Well, apart from the fact she began to develop mutant abilities to locate any person she thought of.
At first her parents joked that she was just good at hide and seek; that she had a knack for tracking people and things down. Until she turned thirteen and her mutant powers emerged through a series of visions. Ever the dutiful daughter, she quickly went to her parents with the information. They were surprised but not totally shocked; both her father and mother had siblings who displayed mutant abilities, and though it took them time to adjust to the fact that their daughter was a mutant, but it didn’t make them love their daughter any less.
Born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, a well to do neighborhood just outside of Chicago, it seemed that everyone not only knew everyone else, but also everyone else’s business. Even the kids that didn’t go to her private, Catholic school, or even lived in the neighborhood, seemed to know who everyone was. There was the typical middle class and poor kids; the ones who attended the public schools closer to the city, who often made their own appearances at the various parties that occurred throughout the year. Hanna always knew their names but didn’t necessarily remember the last time she spoke to any of them. It wasn’t due to snootiness; or at least Hanna didn’t think so. They just never crossed paths; never bothered with her, so she simply didn’t bother to start up any sort of conversation with them; well at least not until one winter night right smack dab in the middle of the school year.
She wasn’t usually the type to go to parties, or at the very least when she did go, she hardly stayed long. However her best friend Melody had a crush on some guy from the football team, who was throwing the party, so out of moral support she told her parents they were having a sleepover at Melody’s house in order to work on some big science project. When it came to their friendship, Melody was certainly the leader while Hanna was the quiet follower. Her best friend, though caring and loyal, was a terrible chatterbox who loved to be the center of attention. Being best friends with a person like that meant that only one of the duo could take center stage, and, well, that meant that Melody was typically the ring leader who dictated where they went and who they went with.
Which is how Hanna ended up at that party on that cold night in late January. Melody had long disappeared, most likely following Marcus Trimble around like a long lost puppy searching for a new home. Hanna ended up leaning against a bookshelf in the living room, surveying the group of drunken teenagers around her. Mostly were her fellow classmates, though a large number were kids from other schools. Marcus’s parents were new money; had recently had a lot of success and had moved into the Oak Park neighborhood, transferring their son from public school to the private Fennwick High. A lot of his middle school friends; kids from the schools closer to the city, still came to crash his parties. After all, it was free booze and a chance to hang with rich kids.
It was there, at that party, standing next to that bookcase and minding her own business, when Luke Cassidy came over to strike up a conversation. She knew of Luke; had seen him around at parties and football games, and had even probably talked to him a time or two. He was that easy going guy; the one that seemed to be able to strike up a conversation with any and everyone. And it seemed it was Hanna who he was planning on talking to next.
Hours later, they were still talking. Hanna was feeling a little tipsy; not terribly drunk or inhibited, but had a good buzz going on. She was finding herself opening up; telling Luke more than even Melody, as her best friend, knew. She was finding Luke easy to talk to; easy to relate too, even though on the surface there wasn’t too much that the teenagers shared in common.
It was that night, that the pair stumbled into a quiet, dark, bedroom, kissing and shedding articles of clothing as one thing led to another. It was Hanna’s first time, and even though some may frown upon the fact that it was with a boy she hardly knew, Hanna wouldn’t of traded it with the world.
And with that, Hanna and Luke began to date. It wasn’t an obvious transition. They weren’t obnoxious or show-y about their relationship. Hanna didn’t even tell Melody, even though it was somewhat obvious that there was someone else taking up her best friend’s time. Luke met her parents only a handful of times, something that though her father thought he seemed polite and nice, her mother severely disapproved of the budding relationship.
It was the greatest couple of months of Hanna’s life. She loved spending time with Luke; loved feeling his hand enclosed around her, and the way he’d softly murmur things before kissing her. Most of all, she loved the talks they had; the way they mutually could easily open up and share so much without a second thought. She had never felt this way before, and though everyone including herself deemed it as being ‘puppy love’, she still couldn’t help but to feel content and happy.
And then her period never came.
It was too Luke that she began to freak out; that she began to worry and rant about how she was pregnant; she knew she was pregnant. Luke remained calm, at least on the surface. He reassured her that she wasn’t; even offered to get her a test. They drove to a drug store, and while Hanna waited in the car, Luke went inside to make the purchase. Then back to his house they went.
Nervously Hanna slipped into the bathroom. She peed on the stick, waited the required two minutes, saw the results, and slipped the test back into the box, which she then placed in her purse. Splashing water onto her face, she forced herself to smile; to take a deep breath and calm down before she went back out to see Luke. ‘False alarm,’ She informed him, and the look of relief on his face made her stomach churn. He looked so relieved; so ecstatic. They carried on with their day; went and saw a movie, took a walk in the park due to the warm weather despite the March date. Hanna acted her part; acted relieved and as if everything was fine, despite the positive pregnancy test that seemed to be burning a hole in her purse.
At the end of the night she kissed Luke, told him he would call, then went home and broke down in front of her parents, telling them what she couldn’t bring herself to tell Luke. Ever the thinkers, they quickly formed a plan. Hanna would leave; would pack her things and move to the east coast; to New York City to be exact, where her aunt; her father’s sister resided. It was there that she would finish out her senior year of high school via a private tutor, all while thinking about what she wanted to do with the pregnancy; whether it was to keep the baby or give it up for adoption.
Hanna never spoke another word to Luke again; she didn’t say goodbye, didn’t offer up any explanation. She attended school for another week and a half, telling all her friends that she got an opportunity to move to NYC; to take these college classes ahead of schedule. No one was surprised, even though Melody and their other friends were sad to see her go. Nobody suspected a thing. Hanna wasn’t even sure if they would believe her if she said the truth; that she was pregnant with Luke Cassidy’s baby.
Fighting tears, Hanna bid her parents a goodbye. Her father gave her one last encouragement to really think about what she wanted to do; that he wanted her to keep the baby even though the decision was ultimately hers. Nodding her head, she then boarded the plane and off to New York she went.
As her belly grew, Hanna’s life in New York was fairly uneventful. Her aunt was sweet; supportive but busy with her own career and didn’t spend too much time at their TriBeCa apartment. Hanna sometimes felt that she saw her tutor more than her own aunt. Nonetheless Hanna simply moved on; she focused on her studies, got her work done, and wandered around the city every now and then.
Occasionally she would Skype with Melody with her growing belly hidden out of the web cam’s view. Her best friend kept insisting on visiting; that she could come spend a week of her summer vacation in Manhattan, yet Hanna kept coming up with excuses. As for college, she was deferring for a year. While the rest of her friends and classmates back home were buying things for their dorm rooms and completing their summer reading lists, Hanna had her nose buried in ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ and picking out colors for a nursery, wondering what Luke would say if he was there. It wasn’t how Hanna expected to spend the summer after her senior year, but it was the hand she was dealt.
She found it hard not to use her powers to peek in on Luke, yet she knew if she did that would just be opening a whole new can of worms. If she wanted a clean break; wanted to move on, then her best bet at doing that was.. well.. not taking one look into the past.
That is, until the day she bumped into someone walking down the sidewalk; and that someone turned out to be Luke Cassidy.
