Name: Daniel Edward Lloyd
Alias: Midas
Age: 29
Date of Birth: 24th August 1980
Nationality: British
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5’ 11”
Appearance: Daniel has a tall and slim form that is frequently displayed in the trim frame of a tailored suit. There is rarely an ounce of unkemptness about his look, usually well groomed and shaved. He has a mature air about him, having lost his boyish appearance many years ago, and his mannerisms and well-spoken tone make him seem older than he actually is. He walks with a straight posture, movement sharp and graceful, never slouching and lolloping around like an uncouth teenager.
Personality: On first encounter outside legal doings, Daniel seems rather standoffish, and tends not to waste time with people he doesn’t care for. His behaviour can be aloof on occasion, and he tends to distance himself from others, normally avoiding attention if he can help it. He holds contempt for those who fail to make a good first impression, and can be stubborn and irrevocable as a result. He has a large sense of personal pride, which can have a great habit of coming off as snobbish arrogance, which can then lead to disdain quite swiftly. He often doesn’t realise how his unapproachable mannerisms reflect on him, which actually façades an honest personality at heart.
Despite how he appears, he avoids confrontations, set in his ways and preferring to simmer to himself than causing an outright quarrel. However, if he feels he had been viciously wronged, or his morals are affected, he can eventually reveal a fiery temper.
Powers: Daniel’s powers lie first and foremost in the control and manipulation of metals. He has little love for his powers, and as a result has not practised their use. They seem to have developed an affinity to gold, and for a time, when struggling with his power controls, began accidentally turning anything he touched into the precious metal. As a result, he dryly referred to this curse as his ‘Midas touch’. The transformation is never permanent, and depending on the strength of power applied, the gold can wear off anytime between a number of hours or a number of weeks. Daniel has been cured once, but since it was proved to not be permanent, his powers have returned and remain to be just as instable. Daniel rarely uses his powers as a result, and tries to focus his mutant attention on his work than his abilities.
History: Daniel was born in Kensington, West London, to Barbara and Gregory Lloyd, both professionals in their own occupation. As a result of their wealth, he was brought up in a luxurious environment and rarely wanting for anything. He was able to attend a top boys’ private school in London for much of his childhood.
His powers manifested when he was 16 years old, during a time when his family hit a proverbial financial minefield, and as a result of a three year court case, lost a lot of their wealth. They were by no means poor, but no longer had the assets to life as they once did. Daniel recognises the link between this catastrophe and the nature of his powers, but at the time of their influx, had little to no control, and could not do anything about the financial dispute. However, he became determined to establish his own substantial income, too used to the luxuries to want to be rid of them, and attended Oxford University at 18 on government funded grants and loans to study Law. After completing seven years of learning and training at varying institutes, Daniel moved to London to begin a scholarship barrister placement, which would eventually become permanent.
Until this point, his powers had been mainly ignored, and he did little with them, anxious about their instability. However, he had researched mutations excessively hard, almost, perhaps, to the extent of deserving a degree in this subject too. Most importantly, in Daniel’s eyes, he had achieved his goals, and felt satisfied with a high-paid job that would see him comfortable for the rest of his life. He had not forgotten about his powers though, and instead turned his knowledge to angling his services to mutants, particularly when the law became blurry on their rights. As a speciality, Daniel is a Human Rights lawyer, but considers himself to be more of a Mutant Rights lawyer, a pun which never fails to amuse him.
Daniel hadn’t quite got it made though. For all his fulfilled professional aspirations, he had rarely set aside time to try his hand at a relationship, and any girlfriends had fizzled out within a matter of months. He tended to dismiss this by assuming they were only after his money, when really it was his detached and formal nature that was a very difficult façade to melt and remains to be to this day. Aside from his lovelife, or lack of one, Daniel eventually headed into legal troubles himself. When he heard that there had been a mutant cure released in America, he found himself desperate to get his hands on the treatment, to rid him of his powers, which he still had not controlled and sometimes caused him great trouble when he began accidentally moving metal objects or turning items into gold. The drug was not permitted for overseas shipment, and in an act of hypocrisy he has never been proud of, paid a black market trade to obtain himself one injection. He paid a substantial sum, and indeed received his cure, which was seemingly successful.
The trouble was not with the drug however; it was with the crime ring he had accosted. They were fully aware that Daniel was a top class and well publicised barrister, and began to blackmail him for more cash, threatening to reveal the dodgy dealings to the press and police by their owns means if he didn’t submit to their requests. Stricken, Daniel paid them their sums of money more than once, before the demands became too high to possibly disburse. Risking the chance of being recognised for his own wrong-doings, Daniel knew enough was enough and contacted the police, who immediately labelled him as a top priority and he was protected by a unit day and night whilst the police found the criminals. Within a month, the ringleaders were found and subsequently charged with many illegalities. Daniel was eventually released of the protection and able to continue with his life.
The press favoured Daniel’s story in the whole event, and he became a newspaper headline preference a number of times during the court proceedings, which actually boosted his reputation. The case was settled within the year, and the criminals were heavily sentenced. Other than that, Daniel’s life had resumed to normal, of course now without powers, which he remained thankful for, despite the mess it had got him into. However, 14 months after he had been cured, Daniel’s powers returned, following the overseas murmurings of the Cure being temporary. The lack of practise and influx of his returned abilities meant they were now more erratic than ever, and would manifest outside his control. He was very much alone in this situation, however, as no one else in England had legally received the Cure, so he couldn’t go public with his problems. Deciding he needed help, he arranged to transferral to the New York office of his law firm, realising that this could be a wide-spread issue in America, and court cases would be popping up all over the place. After settling his Visa details and being arranged accommodation, he moved across the Atlantic to research and consequently take the New York Bar exam to begin his discovery into why the Cure had failed, to help those who felt wronged by the cooperation behind the drug and eventually help with the Mutant Right debate.
