Appearance: Persephone stands at a mere five feet and two inches, and is slim as well. She looks as if the wind might pick her up and carry her away at any moment, and her expression tends to add that she wouldn’t mind if it did. Her long brown hair is usually worn down, and-as it is never blowdried-usually lays in messy but still becoming waves. She has warm brown eyes, a rounded face and high cheekbones as well as full lips with minimal makeup which makes her appear younger than she is. Her style is a unique blend of vintage clothes, things she made herself, and the few items she’s bought from boutiques, and typically could be described as somewhere between a hippie and a hipster.
Personality: Growing up in a less-than-typical setting has shaped Persephone into a bundle of contradictions. Communal living has imprinted in her that she should clean up messes, no matter who had made them, so she can sometimes be found sweeping in the middle of a market aisle or picking up litter to throw in the trash. However, since all messes belong to everyone, everything belongs to everyone, and she can’t help but pickpocket and steal, as she sees nothing morally wrong with it. She’s patient to a fault, but won’t hesitate to speak her mind if she feels she’s being wronged. She’s fiercely independent, able to cook and clean and work all on her own, but now longs for a family or even a makeshift one she can take care of and be a part of. She’s open to all religions, since the one she came from was such a mix and mess of different theologies, and never stereotypes or judges anyone before she speaks to them, because she simply wouldn’t know what to base the judgment on. Her eating habits are still heavily influenced by her upbringing, as she is a strict vegan and eats almost exclusively organic fruits and vegetables (she’ll eat pretty much anything plain that grows from the ground or on a tree). However, she’s not picky once she gets hungry enough and has, from time to time, broken her own diet and eaten whatever she can find. Most cultural references go over her head, although now that she’s been out in the world for a few months, she’s picked up on a few. This mess of contradictions and misunderstandings often causes Persephone to be socially awkward, but it can also be endearing as it’s obvious she never means anyone any harm.
Powers: Persephone has the ability of ‘sublimation’ which is to dissipate her body into a mist or fog-like form. This gives her the power to travel through vents and under locked doors as well as dodge any kind of danger heading her way by becoming mist. She hasn’t had too much practice with her power up until recently, so she can only stay in mist form for so long, and gets worn out quickly.
History:
Jeremiah Weston and Delphia LaMotte both joined a small religious group soon after graduating college. The leader was a charismatic man named Dr. Nadel who mixed the theologies of all main religions (and later claimed to be an incarnation of one of the groups gods) to make his own. The group of about fifteen traveled around together, living in one or two houses and sharing everything. They believed in free love, and bedmates changed on practically a weekly basis. However, Jeremiah and Delphia were in love. They had their first daughter, Harmonia, and then quickly became pregnant again. Dr. Nadel saw that they were too deeply involved with each other and forming a family unit away from the rest of the group so banned Delphia and Jeremiah from speaking to each other once their second child was born. This is how Peresephone came to acquire her name which means ‘bringer of destruction’.
Jeremiah and Delphia moved on to have other children separately, and managed to communicate through letters tucked into their daughters’ pockets and the occasional whispered conversation if they were assigned side-by-side chores. Persephone grew up watching her parents love each other from afar, and always harbored a resentment for Dr.Nadel as it was obvious their separation was his fault.
As she grew older, Seph started to realize how different her living situation was from most. She would get glimpses of families in the grocery store or a class of school children walking down the street and try to imagine what it would be like, and if it was better. It was as her generation was starting to get this itch of curiosity that Dr. Nadel decided to move the group out into an even more secluded area. They now lived on a farm and had no contact with the outside world. It was then that Dr. Nadel started becoming more severe with his teachings, no longer the charismatic man that had lured everyone into the group but now a militant leader that most everyone feared.
When Persephone was fifteen and Harmonia was seventeen, they attempted to run away with a couple of other girls their age from the group. It wasn’t that they were so unhappy with their situation or abused that they ran away in fear, they just needed to get away. Of course, being four teenaged girls running into the woods miles from even the smallest town, they didn’t make it far and were found a day later. When they were brought back, they were punished by being shunned by the entire group for a year and being made to spend hours on end praying to the various deities Dr. Nadel claimed they had offended by attempting an escape.
It was just a few weeks after their punishment began that Persephone began to realize she was different. It started one day when she went to grab the handle of a door, and couldn’t, because her hand had dissipated into mist swirling around where it should have been. Of course, the shock of that instantly caused her hand to leap back together and she didn’t try the trick again for a couple more weeks. Then, one day when she was alone in the corn field she felt a tingling in her toes and as it crept up her legs, she looked down to see she was becoming a soft mist. It didn’t hurt, so she let go and let her entire body become like fog and get carried away by the wind. She knew she had to keep it a secret (even if many others there could posses abilities as well due to the mixing gene pool), so she only told her older sister, and best friend, Harmonia. She did occasionally use her ability to sneak away at night, but only to get glimpses of the outside world she wished she could be a part of.
Harmonia became pregnant when she was twenty-two and Persephone had just turned twenty-one. Persephone witnessed as her sister struggled with the pregnancy, her tiny frame overtaken by a huge stomach while she tried to perform daily chores. When it came time to have the baby, Harmonia endured painful contractions for over a day before Jeremiah, against Dr. Nadel’s commands, rushed her to the hospital. Thankfully, because of Jeremiah, Harmonia and her tiny baby girl were alright, but the doctors at the hospital warned her that her body wouldn’t be able to handle another pregnancy. Dr. Nadel, believing that the most important job for women to produce children, declared the Harmonia was secretly a sinner and shut and locked her in the lean-to, only allowing her one meal a day. Persephone was enraged. Her ever-enduring patience lasted less than three weeks before she decided to confront Dr. Nadel. She yelled and screamed at him, while he simply raised an eyebrow and coolly shrugged her off.
That night after lights out, Persephone used her mutant ability to sneak out to the edge of the woods. She grabbed the firewood-chopping axe that was stuck in a stump and hauled it over to the lean-to. It took all the might and anger she had, but she was able to knock the large padlock off of the door and grab her sister before running off into the woods. With her occasional nightly visits to the town, she now knew where to go and she and Harmonia ran as fast as they could for three days straight before coming upon a motel. They ran like that, together, for nearly two weeks before Harmonia broke down. The outside world was too much for her, and as badly as she had been treated at the group house, she needed to go back and be with her new baby and her family. It was all she knew. So, with a heavy heart, Persephone watched as she only person in the world who had the same experiences as her, went back to where they had come from.
Now on her own, Persephone was able to move much quicker, simply turning to mist and following the wind. After a while, she found herself in the middle of New York City where she has now stayed for two months. She worked at a very small, organic market for a while before the owners were caught as illegal immigrants and the store was shut down. Now she’s just living off the money she still has from that job and her little knowledge of the world.
