Full Name: Illyana Nikolievna Rasputin
Alias: Magik
Age: 21
Birthday: 7th September 1991
Hometown: Lake Baikal, Soviet Siberia
Current Occupation: Student at Xavier's Institute/Training X-Man
(Taking classes in Art History, English Literature, Classics, 20th Century History and Politics)
Appearance: Petite and standing at 5’5”, Illyana is about as far away, look-wise, from her brother as can be. She adores dressing up in vintage-inspired clothes though spends little time on make-up and hair, leaving her blonde tresses falling in natural waves around her elbows.
Personality: Illyana is a rather quiet and reserved girl, liking to spend time by herself to read or draw. Not that she doesn’t like people, though, as she is a complete people person. Only it takes her a while to feel secure in a new environment.
Powers: Illyana is a teleport who can teleport to any location she can visualise. However, the effect is not instantaneous as she spends a second or two in a strange state of non-existence. She can create powerful illusions that affect both her and her subject though Illyana often attributes this to her religion as opposed to a mutation.
History: Born in Soviet Siberia, Illyana and her brother Piotr was schooled in both Russian and English growing up by their parents Nikolai and Alexandra Natalya Rasputin. Piotr was five years older than Illyana but the pair got on well and were quite content to play together in the collective commune rather than mixing with too many other children. Their upbringing was strict, as the Rasputins wanted their children to be installed with the same socialist and atheist views they were.
Illyana was obedient enough not to flaunt her opposing views. Though she had no problem with the socialist aspect of her life, the lack of religion seemed to relate as a lack of purpose to the youngster, and she would always try to get her hands on religious books whenever the family would leave the commune to trade.
When she was nine, Illyana had been lying peacefully in a field, staring up at the skies when she heard cries of distress. She looked towards the cries, failing to notice the escaped tractor heading for her from the other direction. All of a sudden, a strong force knocked her back out of harms way but her safety scared her more than her near-death experience. Piotr had saved her, but was now almost unrecognisable to her. Covered in steel, his sister’s danger had triggered his mutation, leaving the whole commune in shock.
After much arguing, fund raising and tears, Piotr was sent to the Xavier institute in America, leaving his heartbroken sister behind in the commune where she was regarded with suspicion and fear by the other children. They all suspected Illyana would turn out to be as strange as her brother and did their very best to ignore her at all costs. Only Piotr’s continual letters from America could cheer her up and when she asked her brother to sneak her religious books with his gifts, he had the compassion enough to agree.
Isolated and growing up, Illyana pored over her secret books, looking for a religion she could connect with. Eventually she stumbled upon Wicca and embraced the nature-loving religion. Having been raised to appreciate nature for it’s financial benefits, she now appreciated it for other reasons and her epiphany made her ecstatic. It was this sudden joy that triggered her mutation, though it went unnoticed even to Illyana as she just believed herself a strong spell-caster as opposed to a mutant.
However, when a fire ripped through the commune when she was fourteen, Illyana had to accept there was more than magic afoot. Trapped behind a flaming beam in her house, she saw her screaming parents being held a safe distance from the house and willed herself to be there. Within an instant she had vanished from sight, appearing next to them a couple of seconds later. Her mutation now clearly exposed, she begged to go to America to be with Piotr but with Magneto leading his attack on the humans over the cure; her parents and commune forbade it.
This continued for the next three years, as they always found some reason for Illyana not to leave. Eventually fed up, Illyana held out until a cure for the Legacy virus was announced before she all but demanded to leave and her parents knew they could either let her or she would simply run away. So armed with all her earthly belongings (which weren’t much), she headed to Xavier’s to follow her brother’s lead and train with the X-Men.
